The Dow Jones Industrial Average index increased 8.77 points, or 0.03 percent, to 31,261.90 at the close of trading. The S&amp;P 500 index rose 0.57 points, or 0.01 percent, to 3,901.36.<\/p>\n<p>The NASDAQ Composite Index, which is heavily weighted in technology, fell 33.88 points, or 0.3 percent, to 11,354.62. The S&amp;P 500 lost 2.9 percent this week, the Dow lost 3%, and the NASDAQ lost 3.8 percent. The stock market in the United States has been battered this year by fears of increasing inflation and interest rates, with warnings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xtrememarkets.com\/US\/stocks-category\/\"><strong>Walmart Inc.<\/strong><\/a> and other retailers this week adding to concerns about the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla&#8217;s stock dropped 6.4 percent after CEO Elon Musk called charges in a news story that he sexually assaulted a flight attendant on a private jet in 2016 &#8220;utterly untrue.&#8221; Ross Stores&#8217; stock dropped 22.5 percent after the bargain clothes retailer lowered its sales and earnings estimates for 2022.
